(circa 600 – 520 BC)

Among the most acclaimed clinicians, Acharya Sushruta was a maverick who made enduring contributions to medicine and surgery. His efforts ramified their entire fields: as they existed during his lifetime. In the process, he transformed the traditional norms of Ayurveda (i.e. General Medicine) alongside its subsidiary Shalya Tantra (i.e. General Surgery). From detailing hygienic practices to devising surgical instruments, Sushruta was a jack-of-all-trade and master-of-all. Although nearly all his publications are extinct, his extant flagship: Suśrutasaṃhitā (which means Sushruta’s Compendium) remains a guarded treasure. This encyclopedia documented some of the oldest techniques used in assessing symptoms, stabilizing patients, and evaluating therapeutics. Regarding surgery, it compiled various procedures which have since metamorphosed into modern lithotomy, lobuloplasty, rhinoplasty, skin-grafting, realigning dislocations, setting fractures and cataract surgery. Augmenting each of his procedures with directives together with instruments-usage, approximately 350 incisions and 150 implements were detailed. Deferentially, Acharya Sushruta, is deemed “Father of Surgery” within the Indian sub-continent. He is reverenced by India’s neighbors, as well as in the larger Asian environs. His Suśrutasaṃhitā which boasts of nearly 200 chapters (or topics) on all the-then known subfields was noted for elaborations on: Pharmacology, Toxicology, Anaesthesiology, Anatomy, Physiology, Ophthalmology, Dermatology, Rheumatology, Gynaecology, Obstetrics, Orthopedics and Dietetics. This acclaimed compendium was emphatic in recommending dissections and surgical experiences for trainees (using both plant materials and human cadavers). It as well, championed strict hygiene for both doctors and patients. The insights, which Acharya Sushruta provided on both Ayurveda and its affiliated Shalya Tantra, have been hailed universally as eye-opening.
