Extraordinarily influential, Jagadish Chandra Bose was a polymath who made in-depth discoveries in physics and biology. The ease with which he navigated physical and biological sciences evokes the memory of Louis Pasteur. Amongst others, he was a leading researcher on radio waves. In 1894, (prior to Oliver Lodge, Augusto Righi and Pyotr Lebedev), Chandra Bose ran the first experiments on microwaves. His successes culminated in the generation of frequencies which ranged up to 60 GHz (or 5 millimeters). This he achieved using 3-millimeter metal-ball-spark oscillator. Afterwards, he developed the waveguide, horn antennae, and semiconductor crystal detectors with which he advanced his research. Although his works emphasized properties, rather than utilities of waves, they were indispensable to engineers (including Guglielmo Marconi) who used Bose’s Millimeter-Wave Generator designs in enhancing their own knowledge. Regarding biology, Bose’s novelty discoveries in botany saw him inventing Crescograph: for measuring incremental plants’ growths. Focusing on physiology, anatomy and morphology, he pioneered Phytoneurology whose revelations attracted global audience. The-then Indian government was motivated into sponsoring more ecosystems. As a tenured professor, Jagadish Chandra Bose mentored several famous students like Satyendra Nath Bose. And like Madhava of Sangamagrama before him, he instituted a research center which has enlightened generations of scholars. Bose’s versatility meant that he nurtured diverse proteges, who extolled him for laying the foundations of experimental science across the sub-continent. Various commemorations were dedicated to him. In 1970, the 93-kilometer-wide Bose lunar crater: flanked by Bhabha and Alder (inside the South Pole-Aitken basin), was named in his honor.
